Tigers Shuffling In Big Wins
WARSAW – With the Zionsville Invite approaching, Warsaw took an opportunity Tuesday against outmanned Plymouth squads to shuffle the lineup a bit. The Tigers and Lady Tigers still took care of business in the Northern Lakes Conference duals 144-38 for the boys and 135-50 for the girls.
Saturday’s Invite down in Boone County is a midpoint meet for Warsaw coach Tony DeBrota to evaluate the state of his squads. Plymouth’s lack of depth gave DeBrota the ability to move some of his swimmers around, with some new names taking wins in events not normal to the season runs.
The girls side saw more of a abnormal allotment of winners. Lauren Kuhl won the 200 free at 2:13.40 while Brenna Morgan, who just set the school record in the 200 four days ago, won the individual medley (2:25.47) and 500 freestyle (5:20.95).
Delaney Wihebrink also swam an uncharacteristic set of events, helping the medley relay to win (2:07.04) to open the meet, then swimming the last three events in succession. Wihebrink would win the backstroke (1:10.22), the breaststroke (1:14.45) and help the 400 free relay to a 4:26.41 win.
Maddie Ray won the 50 (29.94) in her first event win of the season, as did Olivia Herman in the 100 (1:00.75). Warsaw’s 200 free relay team also came in victorious at 1:54.60.
Plymouth went 1-2 in diving, led by Tristan Pearson at 145.70 and Brooke Wagner at 143.90. Jessica Drury won the butterfly in 1:12.95.
“We tried some new events tonight to get us tuned for Zionsville on Saturday,” said DeBrota. “We looked slower on the blocks tonight than before, but I thought that the actual swimming looked good. I just want to see more intensity when they are tired. Still, we had some personal bests and that is great to see.”
The boys were more business-like, with the usual suspects taking center stage in a 12-win sweep of Plymouth.
Ethan Cook was a winner in the 100 (50.13) and breaststroke (58.60) and Hudson Snyder the IM (2:09.66) and breaststroke (1:08.35). Matt Wildman claimed the 200 (1:54.15), Alex Cook the 50 (24.07), Zach Taylor the fly (58.98), and Kaleb Schneidewent the 500 (5:18.63). Tyler Paseka and Nick Bell went one-two in diving with scores of 201.55 and 194.85.
Warsaw won all three relays, the medley at 1:47.58, the 200 at 1:37.58, and the 400 at 3:41.87.
“Decent times,” began DeBrota. “I think that our turns have been better but we looked rather slow on the relays tonight. I think that we are going to have to do some reinforcement with the sprint practices for a bit to get the reactions up to par again. I am hoping for season and/or personal bests at Zionsville.”
Warsaw’s boys move to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the NLC while the girls sit at 5-2 and 4-2.
