PHOENIX — Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio on Monday, Dec. 7, announced 29 pugs recovered from an abusive environment in a Tonopah home last month will go to Arizona Pug Adoption and Rescue Network for long-term care.
Arpaio said the pugs are in the worst condition of the animals recovered. They have conditions such as tick fever, mange, arthritis and blindness.
The pugs have been receiving treatment at Arpaio’s jail for abused and neglected animals.
“These pugs will require costly daily medical care, most for the rest of their lives,” Arpaio said.
Following a tip, Arpaio’s Animal Crimes Unit on Nov. 17 served a search warrant at the Tonopah home and found 129 animals in poor condition, living with no food or water. Of the animals recovered, 122 are pugs, six are French Bulldogs and one is a cat.
The suspects in the case are facing animal cruelty charges.
Arpaio said the remaining animals will likely be adoptable in the coming month.
“We are accepting applications, through the mail, from those interested in adopting these animals,” Arpaio said.
Arpaio’s office will accept applications to adopt the 96 dogs and one cat through Dec. 21. To apply, visit www.mcso.org/MASH. The application must be mailed to:
