Warsaw Closes Gap In Gauntlet
WARSAW – There has been no let up in competition for the Warsaw girls basketball program. Another state-ranked opponent took the floor Tuesday evening at the Tiger Den, and Warsaw pushed Norwell to the limit in a 49-45 overtime game won by the visiting Knights.
Coming into the night, Warsaw had faced six teams this season with a combined 34-8 record, three of those teams ranked in their respective classes.
Norwell, ranked No. 5 in the Class 3-A poll this week, outscored Warsaw 10-6 in the overtime and had two players in double figures. Quinn Shelton led the charge with 13 points and added four rebounds and two blocks. Kaycee Strunk finished with 11 points and three steals, hitting all three of her three-point attempts.
Stephanie Conrad overcame a 2-13 shooting night to add nine points and five rebounds, four off the offensive glass. Kaylee Roller also had nine points.
Warsaw, which has statistically faced the toughest schedule in the state, rebounded from a rough loss to Whitko Friday night but still have nothing to show in the win column.
Junior Dayton Groninger led Warsaw with 11 points, but was 1-8 from the floor. Groninger was 9-11 from the free throw line and had 10 rebounds and three assists. The junior, however, finished her night on the bench after picking up her fifth foul.
Junior Kenzie Welk recorded 10 points and four rebounds and junior Madi Graham had eight points, five rebounds and a pair of steals for the Tigers.
The JV game went to Norwell by a 54-46 count.
Norwell (6-0) will host Huntington North (6-2) Friday night while Warsaw (0-7) will visit another ranked opponent Thursday night when it plays at Class 2-A No. 2 Oregon-Davis (4-0).
