American Legion Donates Over $7K To CCF
North Webster American Legion Post 253 presented a check for $7,600 to the Cancer Care Fund of Kosciusko County Monday evening, Nov. 30. The proceeds were from Kay’s Cruise for Cancer and Memorial Benefit Weekend held July 11-13, in memory of Kay Kyler.
The Cancer Care Fund representatives were also given memorial donations received by the family for Marjorie Bryce, by her daughter and son-in-law Barb and Dave Currie.
The Memorial Benefit Weekend included a pie auction, bake sake, breakfast, car and motorcycle cruise-in with prizes, poker walk, corn hole contest, a musical jam, and a Dixie cruise and boat flotilla. There were also T-shirts available to purchase and tickets sold for a raffle.
Unfortunately, the 2015 event was the last year for Kay’s Cruise for Cancer. The event has been held for several years.
Kay Kyler was a long-time, active member of the North Webster American Legion Auxiliary Unit 253 and was the wife of former Legion commander Harry Kyler. She passed away in June 2013, after an extended battle with cancer. After her death, Harry Kyler fulfilled on of his wife’s wishes by arranging for a cruise on the Dixie boat. Family and friends joined in to fill the Dixie and form a flotilla of boats that went around the lake in her memory. The funds raised were contributed to KCCF.
In addition to the funds raised for the Cancer Care Fund, $1,500 was given to a North Webster Community member who was stricken with cancer. All unsold T-shirts from last year’s event are being donated to the North Webster Food Bank.
