Elliott Announces Candidacy For Elkhart County Coroner
ELKHART COUNTY — James P. Elliott, chief deputy coroner for Elkhart County, has announced his decision to seek election for the office of Elkhart County Coroner. That office is currently held by John White who’s term limits will be expiring at the end of 2016.
Elliott was first hired as a deputy coroner for Elkhart County in February 2007. Elliott was then appointed chief deputy coroner for Elkhart County in May 2009. Elliott is a certified medical-legal death Investigator which is required by the State of Indiana by state statute. Elliott is also a Nationally Registered Paramedic and State Certified Firefighter with the Mishawaka Fire Department.
During his time as chief deputy coroner, Elliott has assisted White with streamlining all operations within the coroner’s office including digital photography, electronic records management and electronic death certifications. Elliott has also assisted in the research and transitioning of all forensic autopsies to be conducted at the Homer Stryker School of Medicine in Kalamazoo, Mich. This provides a better service for Elkhart County citizens from what is currently being offered locally.
The Elkhart County Coroners’ Office is currently staffed with the coroner, three deputy coroners, and an administrative assistant. Elliott plans on keeping White on staff as a deputy coroner. His knowledge and experience is extremely valuable to the Elkhart County Coroners’ Office. Elliott does not plan on making any other changes within the office as “we have built a great team that is dedicated to continue to serve the citizens of Elkhart County,” he stated.
