Westfield Hands Valley First Loss
AKRON – A fourth quarter rally Saturday night finally did Tippecanoe Valley in. Westfield put together a 19-11 run in the fourth quarter to catch and triumph over Valley, 50-44, in the girls basketball championship game of the Tippecanoe Valley Thanksgiving Classic.
Valley held a slim 33-31 lead heading into the fourth quarter in what was a battle of undefeated clubs, but the Shamrocks awoke. After scoring two points in the third, Westfield scored 19 points in the fourth to move to 9-0 this season.
Valley was led by Anne Secrest’s 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the night game. Brynda Krueger and Meredith Brouyette each scored 10 points and Krueger added seven rebounds.
In the morning game for Valley, Secrest had a huge game with 22 points and 12 rebounds as the Vikings won 53-38 over Portage. Brouyette hit five three-pointers and added six boards and four assists.
The Vikings held just a nine-point edge at the half, but spread out a 17-point advantage after three quarters to help cruise to the win.
Valley also continued to welcome back point guard Karis Tucker into the fold, playing in her second and third games after suffering a knee injury in the offseason.
Valley (5-1), which opened with its first six games at home, now embark on a five-game road trip starting Thursday at Plymouth.
