Forest M. Kendall
Dr. Forest M. Kendall, age 100, of Nappanee, died at 5:46 p.m., Friday, Nov. 27, 2015, at North Woods Village, Mishawaka after an extended illness. He was born Jan. 6, 1915, in Greenfield, to John W. and Agnes (Lonsdale) Kendall. On June 8, 1939, he married Madge Stout in Boswell. She preceded in death Feb. 4, 1997. His second marriage was to Margaret Smeltzer April 27, 2004.
Kendall grew up in Marion. He graduated from Marion High School and received his B.S. and M.D. degrees from Indiana University, graduating in 1939. He was a WWII army veteran, serving as a flight surgeon in the 340th Group, 57th Bomb Wing, North Africa, Italy and Corsica. He moved to Nappanee and opened his practice in 1945. In 1966, he became part of the first fulltime staff of doctors in the Emergency Room at Elkhart General Hospital. He served as Chief-of-staff at Elkhart General Hospital in 1981.
He retired in 1981. Kendall was a member of the Nappanee United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Nappanee Lodge No. 566 F and AM, the Nappanee Chapter Royal Arch, The Goshen Council and Commandery.
He was a charter member of American College of Emergency Physicians and Indiana Chapter, Nappanee Kiwanis, the Elkhart Stamp Club, the Ben Franklin Stamp Club at Nappanee Public Library, which he started, and Nappanee American Legion. He was a former member of the Wa-Nee School Board of Trustees, during which time NorthWood High School was built.
Surviving is his wife, Margaret Smeltzer Kendall; sons, John F. (Kuniko) Kendall, Nappanee, Ronald R. (Barbara) Kendall, Sydney, Australia; stepdaughters, Mary (Tony) Lorenzo, Joliet, Cynthia (Bill) Frascella, Mishawaka; stepson, Jeff (Yvonne) Smeltzer, LasVegas; grandchildren, Zac Kendall, Holly Kendall, David Kendall, Katherine (Eric Nuzum) Kendall; 4 great grandchildren, Calvin Nuzum, Jack Kendall, William Kendall, Forest Kendall; two stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Mary Virginia Megenhardt, Anna Gunderrson; and brothers, Thomas L. and John C. Kendall.
Cremation will take place. Family and friends may call from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2 at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee. Memorial services will begin at 4 p.m. Rev. Jim Davidson will officiate.
