Lady Warriors Open With Win
SYRACUSE – The Wawasee girls swim team finally was able to have some competition Tuesday night. After having their initial opening meet with DeKalb cancelled, the Lady Warrior hosted East Noble to start their season and enjoyed a 114-70 win.
The host team won 11 straight events after falling off the pace in the opening event, the 200 medley relay. East Noble’s relay team of Hannah Denton, Hannah Henning, Ashley Nichols and Hannah Guthrie swam a winning time of 2:07.78 in the event. Wawasee swam a 2:10.53 with its team made up of Kayla Hershberger, Shelby Adams, Alyssa Koch and Lizzie Brugh.
Adams had a fantastic day as she took first in both the 200 free (2:10.33) and the 100 breast (1:15.80). Hershberger captured the top time in both the 100 free (1:00.73) and 100 back (1:06.78).
Paige Miller and Mikala Mahorter also enjoyed two wins a piece in the contest. Miller placed won the 200 IM (2:14.41) and the 500 free (5:12.76). Mawhorter won the 50 free (27.85) and the 100 fly (1:12.26).
Koch, Mawhorter, Hershberger and Miller teamed up for a time of 4:07.27 to win the 400 free relay. Adams, Madi McBride, Mawhorter and Miller won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:50.63.
In the diving portion of the meet it was Hannah Rhoades’ score of 177.45 that earned top honors. East Noble’s Katie Blaize finished second (149.65) with Wawasee’s Riley Kunkle (131.95) and Rachel Starrett (116.20) rounding out the diving scores.
“It was a great first meet,” said Wawasee head coach Julie Robinson. “We have a very young team and it was a good look at what the girls can do.”
Wawasee (1-0) will swim at Warsaw this Saturday.
