WARSAW — America Recycles Day will be observed on Sunday, Nov. 15 this year. Thousands of events across the U.S. will be held to explain and encourage both recycling and the purchase of recycled and reusable materials.
In our community, KC Recycling Depot will be celebrating America Recycles Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14. For more information, you can visit kcrecycling.com.
The children’s department at the library will be featuring books on recycling in the non-fiction area in preparation for the observance. For instance, how about checking out a small paperback book titled “50 Ways to Get Your CartON,” a book about creating “milk and egg carton crafts that rock,” by Ellen Warwick. In it are instructions for producing a Carton of Eden planter, pet masks (wouldn’t any hamster love that?), and Galaxy Alex the Robot, among other projects.
We have a book series called “Easy Crafts in Five Steps,” including instructions for how to use paper or cardboard to make items both pretty and practical. Our “Green Projects for Resourceful Kids” books show how to recycle wrapping paper and old CDs into games, jewelry, storage containers, clocks, and other cool things. We even have books that show how to reuse cardboard tubes, which are pretty easy to come by in most homes.
Three more books that you might enjoy are “Earth-Friendly Crafts for Kids: 50 Awesome Things to Make with Recycled Stuff” by Heather Smith with Joe Rhatigan, “ReMake it! Recycling Projects from the Stuff You Usually Scrap” by Tiffany Threadgould, and “Ecology Crafts for Kids; 50 Great Ways to Make Friends with Planet Earth” by Bobbe Needham.
America Recycles Day has been a program of the national nonprofit “Keep America Beautiful” since 2009. Let’s use our resources to do just that. Let’s keep America beautiful.
