CMA’s Concannon A State Champion
INDIANAPOLIS – Saturday was a banner day for Culver Academy’s Sam Concannon. The senior singles ace for the Eagles emerged as the No. 1 singles state champion after winning his final two matches of his high school career.
Concannon (28-0 overall) defeated Leo’s Eli Steiner 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 in the morning semi-final and came back in the afternoon to beat North Central’s Steve Christie 7-6 (1), 6-2. Christie already won a state championship earlier in the month as North Central claimed the team title over Park Tudor, Christie winning his court in that matchup. Christie advanced to the final by beating previously undefeated Eric Hollingsworth of Richmond 6-4, 6-2.
The title for Concannon is his first tennis state championship.
Goshen’s No. 1 doubles team made the final four, but could not find glory Saturday.
Senior Luke Rush and junior Logan Troyer made it interesting, but fell to Fort Wayne Carroll’s Jimiroqua and Ryan Van Wyngarden 6-4, 6-4 in the semi-finals. Goshen’s duo finish its season 26-2 overall.
Carroll would lose the championship match to North Central’s JJ Kroot and Jon Turek 6-3, 6-3. It is the second state title for the duo after winning the team title earlier in the month against Park Tudor. North Central made the final by defeating Bloomington North’s Jory Shoup and Zach Wisen 7-5, 6-2 in the other semi-final.
