Over 200 Tickets Issued During Move Over, Slow Down Safety Blitz
NORTHWEST INDIANA — The Indiana State Police and The Indiana Department of Transportation wrapped up their “Move Over, Slow Down, It’s the Law” campaign last week and officers issued hundreds of tickets during the week-long blitz aimed at improving safety on Indiana’s roadways.
Indiana State Police officers were looking for drivers who failed to yield (move over and/or slow down) to emergency vehicles. The campaign specifically utilized Highway Incident Response Vehicles working around northwest Indiana, as Indiana State Police staked out their locations. In total, Indiana State Police issued out over 200 tickets during the safety blitz in an effort to provide education to drivers about their role in keeping emergency responders safe on the job.
Low public awareness of the law led INDOT and Indiana State Police to team up in the “Move Over, Slow Down, It’s the Law” campaign. The campaign’s goal was simple; reminding all drivers that they are required by law to move over and/or slow down when they see emergency vehicles, highway incident-response vehicles, highway maintenance vehicles, utility service vehicles or tow trucks stopped on the side of the road.
Data will be collected over the next month to see if drivers are getting the message. Additional safety campaigns are possible in an effort to raise awareness of this important law.
So remember, when you see those flashing lights on the side of the road, Move Over and/or Slow Down. It’s the Law.
The Indiana State Police would like to thank the Hammond Police Department for their assistance with this campaign in northwest Indiana.
