Penn Ends Memorial’s Dream Run
SOUTH BEND – There won’t be another magical run to the state finals by a surprise Northern Lakes Conference team. One year after Goshen marched to a state championship, Elkhart Memorial – which knocked out No. 1 Goshen from the sectional – lost in the Class 2-A regional final Saturday to Penn, 2-1.
Memorial held a 1-0 lead into the second half using a Jaime Mayorga goal. But the Kingsmen rallied with goals from Macrae Smith and Edgar Botello, the latter coming with 11 minutes to go, to lift the Kingsmen to the semi-state next week at Warsaw.
Memorial, which finishes at 15-5, set a school record for wins in a season. Penn (15-4) will meet Fort Wayne Canterbury (17-1-2) after defeating Leo, 3-1, in the Fort Wayne Carroll Regional final. The other game at Warsaw will pit Lake Central (17-2) against Lafayette Harrison (17-2-1).
Elsewhere in Class 1-A boys regional finals:
At Whitko, Fort Wayne Blackhawk (13-6-2) defeated Heritage (15-4) by a count of 5-1.
At Argos, the host Argos Dragons (15-3-2) shut out Eastern (16-2-1) 3-0. Argos and Blackhawk will meet in the Class 1-A semi-state back at Argos next Saturday.
At LaVille, Marian (17-2) crushed Rensselaer Central (14-3-4) 6-0 and will meet Muncie Burris (12-5-2), a 1-0 winner over Heritage Christian, in the other game at Argos next week.
In girls regional finals:
At Goshen, Penn held South Bend St. Joseph’s to just one shot, but needed a corner kick goal from Jensen Stroinski to win 1-0. St. Joe closes at 11-5. The Lady Kingsmen move to 19-0-2 and will face Leo (14-2-2) at the Class 2-A South Bend St. Joseph’s Semi-state next week. The other game at St. Joe will have Fishers (15-3-2) playing Munster (21-1).
At Mishawaka Marian, the Knights used goals from Caroline Baughman and Meghan Bullock to knock out Westview 2-1 in the Class 1-A regional. Westview closes at 15-5-1 while Marian (16-5) moves on to play Andrean at LaVille, which got through with a 3-0 win over Boone Grove.
