Several Events On Tap Surrounding Whitko Athletics
SOUTH WHITLEY – A trio of activities surrounding Whitko athletics and its athletes are on tap, beginning with this weekend.
* This Saturday, a Special Olympics Bash – organized by Whitko High School junior Hanna Yohe – will take place. It is a 5K race that will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the South Whitley fire station, registration beginning at 8:45. Cost is $20 per person, to which 100 percent of the proceeds will be donated to the Special Olympics. A cornhole tournament will also take place this Saturday in conjunction with the race. The tournament starts at 1 p.m. at the South Whitley town park, with registration beginning at 12:30. The cost for a team is $20, and walk-ups are welcome.
Said Yohe of putting together the event for this weekend, “I have a woman of special needs in my family who I am really close to, and being able to spend time with her and helping her smile is always a great pleasure for me. During those moments, it makes me feel like I am making a difference in her life.
“I then attended a leadership conference at Grace College, and they talked a lot about helping out special needs kids, which is always a great idea, and my dream job is to become a nurse in the special needs field. I wanted to take the time to create this event in order to help special needs kids, and to show everyone that they are a part of us, just like anyone else in society.
“I have been fundraising for charities like this since my freshman year, and I plan to continue doing so for as long as I possibly can.”
* On Saturday, Oct. 31, Whitko’s high school cross country program is sponsoring a Halloween Fun Run and Walk.
The afternoon full of feet shuffling will take place at Whitko Middle School. At 12:45 p.m., a 3K Fun Walk will begin, followed by a kindergarten-fifth grade one-mile run at 1:40 p.m. A 5K for middle school through adult men will begin at 2 p.m. and the same 5K for women will start at approximately 2:45 p.m.
Check-in will start at noon at the WMS tennis courts, and cost is $20 per participant which includes a T-shirt, or $10 without a T-shirt. Pre-registration is required to receive a shirt. Given the day is Halloween, runners are invited to wear their Halloween costumes (please use taste and tact). Awards for the top runner in several categories will be given following the women’s race.
