Board Continues Discussing Master Plan
SYRACUSE — At the Syracuse Parks and Recreation Board meeting Monday evening Oct. 12, the board discussed a number of potential items for the department’s five-year master plan. The master plan is a document that outlines potential development of programming or property the board will work to achieve during the time frame.
Parks superintendent Chad Jonsson provided members a list of 14 project areas with more than 60 suggested items from public input and board members to be considered. Jonsson suggested the members prioritize the list and provide him with feedback via email and those items would be discussed at the next meeting.
Some areas mentioned during the meeting were the skate park and a storage building near SR 13 and Crosson Mill.
Shading and repairs to the skate park brought about a question regarding the use of the skate park. Jonsson reported depending on the weather conditions, the park receives a large amount of patrons. Other projects include removal of a small storage building near SR 13, at the hilltop near the skate park.
As mentioned in past meetings a safety fence is planned to be installed near the dam at Crosson Mill Park. The superintendent advised work is planned in that area to remove a tree. Once that has been completed the property could be re-assessed for a placement of a fence.
Tyler McLead, program director, updated the board on past and future department events. He reported the children’s Art in the Park activity during the market hours received an average of 25 participants during its opening season and the Scenic Syracuse photo contest received 22 entries this year.
Upcoming events include The Haunted Thrill at Crosson Mill 7:30 to 10 p.m. Oct. 23-24, 30-31 at Veteran’s Memorial Park at Crosson Mill. The indoor garage sale is scheduled 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at Syracuse Community Center, 1013 N. Long Drive. McLead reported there will be 30 different vendors on site with no openings available at this time.
The end of the year celebrations include Holiday Magic scheduled 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at Veteran’s Memorial Park and breakfast with Santa will be held 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at Syracuse Community Center.
