Triton Hits On All Cylinders In Win
BOURBON – Two local volleyball teams competed on the hardwood Tuesday night as Triton welcomed in Wawasee for the two squads’ annual matchup. The Trojans were able to get an early lead and hold on for a eventual 3-1 win over the visiting Warriors.
“Everybody was playing well tonight,” remarked Triton head coach Sam Willsey. “Our defense was spectacular. We had great ball control, I’ve been emphasizing first contact, it’s so important. And all of my hitters have been stepping up, it’s not just our two outsider hitters. Everybody is starting to step up.”
Willsey’s squad jumped out to a quick win in the first game, 25-11. Wawasee put up more of a fight in the second but Triton was able to score a 25-16 victory.
The Warriors finally woke up in the third game of the night. Wawasee jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind the serves of Taylor Mock. Wawasee would actually build its lead to as large as 14 points, a small comeback towards the end by the Trojans made the game look a little closer than it was as the visitors hung on for a 25-18 win.
Wawasee’s effort in the third game was perhaps its best of the season. The team played together and was able to score the win. Head coach Ryan Edgar attributes the nice performance in that game to the fight his team put up.
“The last couple of games I’ve been talking to our girls about needing leadership,” Edgar began. “We need girls that, when they mistakes, they don’t put their heads down. We need girls that come right back and fire the team up.
“After that second game I told them that there was an option of being done in three and feeling sorry for ourselves or we could fight. When these girls fight, they’re able to play. We used our hitters a lot more in that third game. We started passing the ball up, we set the ball up. If we’re hitting the ball well, other teams can’t hammer back at us. We’re to accustomed to playing defensive volleyball.”
The two squads put on an exciting third match that the Trojans would eventually win 25-20.
Statistically the Warriors were led by Seaquinn Bright who totaled 18 digs, seven kills and a trio of aces. Hannah-Marie Lamle led Wawasee with four aces. Madi Wilson topped the stat list for the visitors with 32 digs.
Jaela Meister led all players with 24 kills for Triton. Quinn Downing (16 digs), Courtney Jennings (two blocks) and Emma Ross (three aces) rounded out the statistical leaders for the Trojans.
Wawasee (3-25) will travel to Northridge Thursday night to finish out the regular season. Triton (15-13) will host Plymouth.
Wawasee won the JV match 25-16, 25-23.
