Red Devils Struck From Mascot Contenders
GOSHEN — “Red Devils” has been struck from the list of nickname options for the next mascot at Goshen High School and Goshen Middle School, but students will need to vote again before the top three names are announced, according to the mascot selection committee.
More than 2,500 Goshen High School and Goshen Middle School students cast their votes Thursday for one of the 15 options presented by the committee.
After the list was shared with the community, several people took to social media to express concerns about the “Red Devils” option.
“We decided that we couldn’t move forward with the Red Devils nickname out of fear that it might be divisive to the community and that’s not what we want from this process,” Goshen High School Principal Barry Younghans said.
Concerns about the “Red Devils” nickname cropped up a few times during the committee’s discussions, but Younghans said the students and adults on the committee decided to “let that play out.”
After tallying the votes from Thursday’s vote, the “Red Devils, although not in the top three, had enough votes that committee members thought it would be better to vote again without the nickname as an option.
Goshen High School students will vote again on Monday for their top three picks out of 14 options. Goshen Middle School students, who do not have access to a one-to-one computer program, will vote Monday or Tuesday, Younghans said.
“We think this might push our process behind a couple days, but we felt it needed to be done,” he explained.
