Little People Leave Luke Bryan Concert After Being Harassed
INDIANAPOLIS — October is Dwarfism Awareness Month, but that did not stop the harassment two little people received at the Luke Bryan concert in Fort Wayne last Wednesday, Sept. 30.
Rebecca Salois has spent the past 25 years getting used to stares, double takes and comments people make to each other about her whenever they see her.
“I went to the grocery store and there’s these two, I could tell they were older, like, they weren’t young kids. They were probably over the age of 18. And one of ’em goes, ‘Look behind you, it’s a midget,'” she said of some of the derogatory commentary she gets on a daily basis.
So she wasn’t really surprised by what she said happened to her and a friend, who is also a little person, last week at the concert.
“She’s a huge country fan and so am I and I was like ‘We’re going. We definitely have to go to this,'” Rebecca wrote in a post on her blog, retelling the night’s events.
Moments after they got to the concert though, Rebecca said the negative attention started.
“The first thing I hear is, ‘Oh my God, it’s two midgets.’ I was like, ‘It’s okay. It’s okay. That’s it. If that’s the worst, I’m fine. I’m fine.’ The worst that’s going to happen is we’re going to be stared at, I get it,” she said.
Rebecca says people started taking pictures of her and her friend, with some coming up demanding a hug.
“It’s as if we’re a freak show. As if we can’t be treated normal,” she said.
But sadly, this is the norm for Rebecca and other little people in the U.S., she said, despite efforts to raise awareness about dwarfism by groups like Little People of America.
