North Webster Celebrates Fire Prevention Week
By DAVE RENSBERGER
Assistant Chief, North Webster Tippecanoe Township Fire Department
NORTH WEBSTER — Next week is Fire Prevention Week, and the North Webster Fire Department will be spending the day with North Webster Elementary to go over fire prevention methods.
This year, because of scheduling conflicts, the fire department will be there tomorrow, Oct. 2. They will start with dropping the fire alarm around 8:30 a.m. and continue all day.
There will also be a coloring contest, and the winners will be announced at the end of the day with prizes awarded and a ride in a fire truck running lights and sirens.
Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on Oct. 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on Oct. 9, 1871.
Every year, Fire Prevention Week has a theme, and this year, the theme is “Hear The Beep Where You Sleep. Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm.”
