Carroll Breaks Up Warsaw’s Streak
HUNTERTOWN – It took a team 14 tries, but someone deemed Warsaw’s girls soccer club as mortal. Fort Wayne Carroll kept Warsaw at bay Tuesday in a 2-0 result in a match that was originally scheduled to have been the season opener.
Replayed due to a thunderstorm in August, the Class 2-A powers collided at Carroll where the home side struck quickly. Cali Geiger scored in the ninth minute to put the Chargers up 1-0. It took nearly an hour of pitch time for Carroll to strike again, but did, when Nicole Fosnough found the net in the 70th minute.
Chloe Snow was back in goal for the Tigers and made three saves. Snow had missed two weeks after an injury suffered against Fort Wayne Northrop.
Carroll, which reached the IHSAA Class 2-A Final Four a year ago, move to 9-3-4 on the season and are currently ranked No. 13 in the latest 2-A poll. Warsaw loses its first match and sit at 13-1 and ranked No. 19 in the Class 2-A poll.
While Tuesday’s match was a meter game for a possible state showdown, Warsaw’s focus is more tuned to this Thursday. Northridge is coming to Tiger Town, bringing a 10-3-3 record but also a 5-0-1 Northern Lakes Conference mark with it. Ridge enters the match after having knocked off Carroll, 2-1, last Saturday at Carroll.
Thursday’s winner would take the NLC outright, or a tie would give the Tigers the NLC crown given Warsaw enters the match with a 6-0 NLC mark. Northridge’s only blemish was a 0-0 tie against Concord in mid-September.
The match Thursday begins with JV action at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity to follow.
The Warsaw soccer program also asks fans to donate to help with the club’s involvement in Feed My Starving Children, which is taking place this October in Warsaw. Children who are members of any Warsaw soccer program are also invited to wear their jerseys, which will get them into the Northridge match for free.
