If the typical “Wall Street” approach to retirement planning has you intimidated or confused, you will want to sign up for the two-class ABC Retirement Planning Course hosted by the North Webster Community Public Library 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 17 and Saturday, Oct. 24. Taught by Adult Financial Education Services, this course teaches the basics of retirement planning for those 50 and older. This course uses a common sense “Main Street” approach to help you understand where you are in your retirement plan and how to achieve your retirement objectives. You will be gain the tools, insights, and strategies to help you build and maintain a retirement plan that meets your needs.
The course costs $49 per person with spouses attending for free. Couples may share a workbook or purchase an additional one for $19. Advance registration and pre-payment is required to attend. Course information and registration forms are available at the library or you can register and pay online at www.afes.org. Adult Financial Education Services is a non-profit corporation devoted to helping improve the financial literacy of adults 50 and older.
Whereas the ABC Retirement Planning Course helps you plan your future, the Beginning Genealogy Course will help you understand your past. There are still openings available for this four-class course taught 3:30 p.m. every Wednesday, Oct. 7-28. Taught by local history and Genealogy Center Director Beth Smith, this course will teach you how to get started researching your family history including how to find information online and in libraries, terminology, research tips, and how to interpret and organize the information you find. The course is free, but pre-registration is needed. Sign up at the circulation desk or call (574) 834-7122 to reserve your spot.
In the youth services department, crafts and stories is held 4-5 p.m. every Tuesday after school when children in grades K-5 have fun doing crafts while listening to stories. Preschoolers have their own activities during preschool story time every Wednesday morning through Nov. 11. There is a choice of two time slots at 10:30 a.m. or 11:30 a.m. Geared toward ages 3-5, the fall session focuses on learning about transportation and “How We Go” through stories, songs, finger plays, and crafts. Older children, ages 5-12, learn building creativity at the monthly Second Saturday LEGO Club 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10.
