Historical Society Publishes New Book
WARSAW — The Kosciusko County Historical Society has published a new book titled “That’s Life, Stories of Kosciusko County.” This fun-filled, 226-page book is available now from the Old Jail Museum, corner of Indiana and Main streets, in Warsaw.
“That’s Life” is being published as a fund-raiser for the society and to honor the state on its 200th anniversary — which will occur next year — and the Historical Society on its 50th anniversary — which will also take place next year. The book will be a keepsake of these events and make for unique Christmas, birthday and anniversary gifts.
The soft-covered book combines into one volume over 40 stories from the society’s quarterly magazine, “The Thaddeus.” Written by county historian Dan Coplen, the articles in the book concern such things as the old Flagpole custard stand, a town clown, the Blizzard of 1978, a summertime resort on Huffman Lake at Atwood, and the time a Notre Dame football team played a game in Warsaw.
There are also stories about old cars and tractors, a chocolate factory, the county’s last cattle drive, legendary football and basketball coach George Fisher and the time Col. Harland Sanders came to Warsaw to coax a local restaurant owner into cooking chicken the Kentucky Fried way. There’s even a story about Ku Klux Klan activities in the county.
For a limited time, “That’s Life” is being sold at the discounted price of $18.16, an amount that pays homage to the year 1816, the year Indiana became a state. This special, introductory price includes all taxes, but does not include a $6 shipping and handling fee. Shipping and handling will be added only when those purchasing the book choose to have it mailed to someone rather than picking it up at the Old Jail Museum.
More information about the book is available at the Old Jail Museum, or by calling the museum at (574) 269-1078. Information is also available at the Historical Society’s website. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
