Classic Books For Your Little Ones

WARSAW — This week at WCPL, children’s services received some shiny new books from our cataloging department. The books are from the “Billy and Blaze” series, written by C.W. Anderson and published between 1936 and 1970. Our Facebook friends have been excited to see our new acquisitions.
I was wondering about other series that people remember from their own childhood. Duane Herendeen, the children’s services supervisor, looks back fondly on the Richard Scarry books that were stocked by his school library. Anna Jackson, reference librarian, remembers reading the Boxcar Children series, as well as Nancy Drew, Cherry Ames, and the American Girl books.
Another of our employees from information services, Charlene Caron, recalls these too, along with “Anne of Green Gables” and its accompanying volumes, and the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. These are being avidly read by young people since the first tome was published 83 years ago.
Charlene was also a fan of some books that were not parts of series. “Will you Come to my Party” was a favorite when she was a child, and her children clamored for “Mr. Grumpy’s Outing.”
I loved the Joy Sparton series by Ruth Johnson Jay and the Sugar Creek Gang books, some of which we have ordered and are waiting. I read silly books like “Ten Apples Up On Top,” “Put Me in the Zoo” and “A Fish Out Of Water” to my younger siblings.
Library patron Wendy Christy remembers reading “The Poky Little Puppy” to her children and realizing that she had read the story as a child. She recalled the vibrant green of the grass and read of the strawberry. What were your favorite books? Let us know on our Facebook page!
