Two-Year-Old Dies From Injuries, Man Charged
PLYMOUTH — A 2-year-old female died Saturday evening at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, from injuries she sustained the day before. An autopsy is pending.
Shane Weedling, 23, 2500 block North Michigan Street, Plymouth, has been charged with neglect of a dependent, a level 3 felony, and possession of marijuana, a level 6 felony. He is being held in the Marshall County Jail on $10,000 cash bond.
Plymouth Police were called to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center at 2:31 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, regarding suspicious injuries to a 2-year-old. The 2-year-old was unconscious with a serious head injury.
The mother had transported the child to the hospital. Older injuries were also present on the body of the victim. Due to the critical condition of the child, she was flown by helicopter to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. On the evening of Sept. 19, the toddler died at Lutheran Hospital.
Investigation by a detective with the Plymouth Police Department revealed that the head injury had occurred earlier in the morning of Sept 18. Weedling had been caring for the child at that time.
Weedling was located at his residence and had possession of suspected marijuana at that time. Weedling was interviewed at the Plymouth Police Department and then arrested
Further investigation is pending.
