There Is ‘Smoke On The Mountain’ In Nappanee
NAPPANEE — If you like old-fashioned toe tapping gospel music you won’t want to miss Amish Acre’s Round Barn Theatre’s “Smoke On The Mountain,“ now on stage.
The musical takes place at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church near Hickory, N.C., in 1938 and features the Sanders family, including twins teen-age Dennis and Denise (Jeff Raab) and (Jocelyn Lonquist).
Others in the Sanders family are: Vera, the mother (Amber Burgess), who is also the show’s director; Burl, the father (Paul Kerr); Stanley, the brother (Perry Orfanella); and June, a daughter (Katherine Yacko). There is also Rev. Mervin Oglethorpe (Rlyan A. Schisler), who ties it all together as minister of the church.
Entering the theatre (the church), the audience (the congregation) is greeted by Miss Myrtle and Miss Maude, who are critical of what’s going on on stage during the performance even though neither says a word during the performance..
It’s time to start but the Sanders family is late. Rev. Oglethorpe tries his best to keep the congregation’s attention. June arrives to tell him the family’s bus has turned over. No one was hurt and the others will be there shortly. She declares she doesn’t sing, she signs.
When they arrive, the family begins to sing immediately. “The Church in the Wildwood” and “Wonderful Time Up There,” are among the opening numbers.
June does her own style of signing for the songs and keeps the audience in stitches. She also plays household items, from spoons to a washboard, to the delight of the audience.
Each member of the family shares something and is then the featured artist on a song that goes along with what is shared.
Burl tells about the time he almost decided to sell beer to help the family business prosper. The Lord, he said, had other ideas.
Vera gives the children’s story for the evening and talks about June bugs.
Denise talks about the time she ran off to try out for a movie and took June’s new pocketbook since it matched her shoes. Twin brother Dennis is the shy one in the family and had the audience in stitches as he declared, “I’m the boy.” He wants to be a preacher and struggled through the message his mother had written, prior to delivering a fire and brimstone message of his own.
Stanley tells how he had been building a bridge as a prisoner and was welcomed home by his brother.
June and Denise beg to sing their song and the first act ends as Rev. Oglethorpe tries to stop the girls from dancing as they sing, “I’ll Live a Million Years.” Both Miss Maude and Miss Myrtle stomp out of the church and the minister suggests it’s time for refreshments.
Songs that prove to be audience favorites include “No Tears In Heaven,” “Christian Cowboy,” “Jesus is Mine,” “Angel Band” and “I’ll Fly Away.”
There is no single star in this production. Everyone on stage spends equal time in the spotlight. There is a lot of energy that goes into making “Smoke on the Mountain” the success it is. The family members are super as they sing and play a variety of instruments. And, Rev. Oglethorpe is the glue that holds the production together.
“Smoke on the Mountain” continues through Oct. 18. For additional information or tickets call (800) 800-4942 or online at www.amishacres.com.
