Board Updated On Adult Education, Akron Project
MENTONE — The Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation Board of Trustees had a full agenda during its regular session Monday evening, Sept. 14, at Mentone Elementary School.
Superintendent, Brett Boggs, announced a college planning kickoff, set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, in the lecture room at Tippecanoe Valley High School. Students and parents can come learn more about scholarships, the FAFSA and choosing a college and a major.
The board also heard from representatives of the adult education program that takes place two nights a week at Akron Elementary School. The main focus of the program is preparation for the TASC, which has replaced the GED in Indiana.
It also focuses on employment and post-secondary goals so each participant is able to meet his or her goals. There is also a focus on English as a new language.
The class is for anyone wishing to obtain a general education diploma after leaving high school early for any reason. Age is not an issue, with one participant being 16 years old and another, 83. There are no limits or requirements for who may and may not participate.
Following the presentation, the board passed a new food allergy policy. See related.
The board also received a brief update on the planning stages for the Akron Elementary School building. Superintendent Brett Boggs explained that the building is very old and, while part of it can still be renovated, the rest needs to be torn down and rebuilt.
At this stage, the board is looking at potential layouts for the building, such as classrooms, gym and locker room space and parking. Drainage is also in the discussion stages. The project is expected to cost around $17.6 million. Boggs added that the corporation will soon pay off work done to the Mentone Elementary building, so they will not simultaneously be in debt on two projects.
As far as timelines, Boggs said, work is expected to begin this spring and will be completed in phases.
Student liaison, Jonathan Engle, gave an update on the new archery club, stating that it had a good turnout.
Engle also noted that a chili supper is set to take place before the Valley home football game Friday, Sept. 25, though a specific time has not been set. Funds raised will go toward putting a metal roof on the Prill School museum building.
