Air Show Update Given At Aviation Meeting
WARSAW — A wrap up of the 2015 Air Show was presented to members of the Warsaw Board of Aviation Commissioners during Tuesday evening’s monthly meeting.
Nick King, airport manager, reported the show received high marks from the Federal Aviation Administration, as well as from participants and spectators. Attendance was between 3,000-4,000 on Friday, 8,000-10,000 Saturday and 1,000-1,500 on Sunday. Plans are in the works for next year if it is financially viable. King also noted the group has begun putting together requests for performers.
Charles Smith, board member, questioned the length of the event in relation to costs, things which could be done differently next year as well as the possibility of corporate gifts and corporate tents.
King stated the air show committee is still receiving donations knocking down the $35,000 deficit. “The biggest thing we need is more volunteers,” said King noting they are working on more volunteers for next year’s event, as well as contacting a number of organizations. He also noted they are looking hard at possibly hosting a two-day show on Saturday and Sunday, along with looking into more non-food vendors such as farmer/trade vendors.
“It was a lot of hard work, but definitely worth it in the end,” said King.
During the engineer’s report from Ken Ross, NGC Corp., aviation consulting, Greenwood, the finalized draft for the airport layout plan update has been completed and is going through final tweaks. The goal is to submit the plan to the FAA planning specialist in the coming week.
Ross also reported the reimbursement for the land purchase from the FAA, in the amount of $568,321 has been approved and should be arriving shortly.
Ross received board approval on the final pay request for guidance sign installation, totaling $19,813.72. The costs is $2,210.50 less than originally quoted. The local airport authority is responsible for $990.08 of the total costs with state funds covering $990.64 and FAA funds covering $17,832.
While Ross had no new details regarding the power line relocation, Smith asked about a time line for the project. Ross stated the FAA’s environmental specialist has had the report since April but there has been no action at this time. He did add the state is showing allocation of $2 million for moving the lines in their 2016 budget.
During other business Ideal Construction was awarded the bid to pour concrete for two aprons for hangers at the north end of the airport. Their bid was at $6,384. Two other bids were received from companies at a higher cost.
King reported the annual CASA event will be held Nov. 14, and moved to the Image Air hanger. He stated this improvement will provide better parking area for guests, keeping vehicles off ramps.
Financially, King stated the airport is in the red and it has been a normal few months for the airport. Airport staff are preparing equipment for the upcoming winter months. He also reported he is working with OrthoWorx to develop a display in the airport lobby showcasing the city and its orthopedic industry.
The next meeting of the aviation commission was moved from its regularly scheduled Oct. 13 meeting to Tuesday, Oct. 20, due to a conflict with a conference to be attended by King.
