Whitko Sports Wrap – Aug. 29
Whitko didn’t have a full team compete, but did have runners working at the Northfield Invitational Saturday morning.
The Whitko girls had its fifth runner out with injury, but its other four were active. Leading the team was an eighth place run from Brigit Nemitz, who clocked in at 21:09. Continuing the pace was Suzi Sickafoose (14, 22:27), Hanna Yohe (26, 23:33) and Lizz Foutz (44, 27:57).
The boys are waiting for its fifth runner to become eligible, so four ran at Northfield. Taking team honors was Logan Busz in 23rd place at 19:18. Filling out the remainder of the Wildcat finishers were Zack Freel (32, 19:57) and Ezra Miller (44, 21:44).
The teams will assemble again to run Saturday at the Marion Invitational at Indiana Wesleyan.
Ladies Win Soccer Match
The Whitko girls soccer team picked up its first win of the season with a 1-0 home verdict over Maconaquah Saturday.
Freshman Emily Oliphant tallied her first high school goal in the opening half to lift Whitko to the win.
Stephanie Baughman had five saves in the net for the Wildcats.
Whitko (1-3) plays at Mississinewa next Saturday.
Herendeen Paces Soccer Win
Tyler Herendeen booted home a pair of goals as the Whitko boys soccer team topped Maconaquah by a 3-1 final in South Whitley Saturday.
Connor Castillo scored the other goal for Whitko in the victory.
Devin Goggin had eight saves in goal for the winners, who had 22 shots on goal in the match.
Whitko (2-3) plays at Heritage Wednesday evening.
Volleyball Team Goes 2-2 At Westview
The Whitko volleyball team split four matches Saturday in the Westview Invitational.
The Wildcats topped Central Noble and Eastside each by 2-1 finals. Whitko lost to Goshen and Concord, both by 2-0 counts.
Haley Yohe led the way with 57 assists and 31 digs on the day.
Kaity Reed had 36 kills and 49 digs for Whitko, while Emily Day had 15 kills and 32 digs and Brianna Tackett added 15 kills.
Whitko, now 4-3, will host North Miami on Thursday at 6 p.m.
