Lady Warriors Take Invite Title
SYRACUSE – It was a beautiful day to be outside and even better day to hit the links. That’s just what teams from all over the area did at South Shore Golf Club at the annual Wawasee Invitational.
It was the host team that did the most smiling on a sunny Saturday afternoon as the Wawasee Lady Warriors finished well ahead of the competition with a total team score of 356, 51 strokes ahead of second place Concord (407). Each of Wawasee’s varsity five finished in the top 10.
“This just shows the depth that we have,” stated Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone. “The girls played very well today, they all shot in the 90’s or lower.
“Aubrey (Schmeltz) obviously had a great day. She shot a 39 on the front nine and really played well.”
Schmeltz did have a fantastic day on the course. The junior played the No. 1 spot for the first time in her career and finished with an 82, giving her medalist honors for the tournament. Schmeltz highlighted her day with a birdie on 13.
“I think the biggest thing today was not using my driver,” Schmeltz began. “I’ve not been hitting that well so I just played it safe and that made a big difference. I hit a lot of fairways and some greens in regulation. When I wasn’t hitting greens I was setting myself up for good chips and I hit a lot of long putts today.”
Schmeltz’s score was complimented from her teammates. Kylee Rostochak signed for a 90 while Mikala Mawhorter and Madison Beaman both shot a 92. Kamryn Foy rounded out the varsity five for the Lady Warriors with a 97.
Wawasee’s JV team also participated and shot a 460. The Wawasee “Green” team was led by Zoe White’s 106. Lesley Tayaqua (115), Dara Hatch (117), Katie Weisser (122) and Rhyss Kunkle (134) rounded out the scores for the JV team.
Whitko finished with a 468, led by Holly Hathaway’s 109. Aurelia Slusher was close behind with a 110. Claire Reiff (118), Alexis Rider (131) and Makayla Compton (182) rounded out the scores for the Lady Wildcats.
Lakeland Christian Academy was represented by Abigail Fishel who used a 76/61 on her front and back nine, respectively to sign for a 137.
