INDIANAPOLIS — In celebration of its 20th anniversary year, Spirit and Place will explore the notion of “full circle dreaming” with three panelists who have each had the audacity to dream beyond themselves and instead have built lives and careers focused on their dreams for building better communities.
Spirit and Place is a collaborative community project that brings together 19,000 central Indiana citizens each year through public programs that ignite creativity, inspire place-making and spark connections in order to build more vibrant and civically engaged communities.
Together, Grammy-winning artist/activist Killer Mike, restaurateur Martha Hoover and pastor Dr. David Hampton will explore how they turned their dreams for improving the world into reality and what motivates them to continue to work toward a greater good.
Michael Render, aka “Killer Mike” for his ability to “kill the mic” during his shows, is an Atlanta-based hip hop artist and bold social activist. By focusing on issues such as the for-profit prison system, police brutality and same-sex marriage, he thoughtfully shines a light on how all Americans suffer when injustice prevails.
Martha Hoover, local restaurateur, followed her personal dream and left the prosecutor’s office in 1989 to open the first of many restaurants in a now dynamic dining empire. Her personal values of service to others never left her, however. With the opening of Public Greens earlier this year, the Patachou Foundation strives to meet its mission of feeding children in the community impacted by homelessness and hunger.
Dr. David A. Hampton is senior pastor of Light of the World Christian Church. Hampton is a tireless champion for social justice, a human rights activist and a passionate leader with a voice that resonates within the religious and civic communities. He has led numerous protests, is an advocate for youth and children – especially quality education – and has preached the gospel locally, nationally and globally.
“Full Circle Dreaming” is one of five Spirit and Place Festival 2015 Signature Series events. The event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13. It will take place at Light of the World Christian Church, 4646 Michigan Road, Indianapolis.
