It’s Anchors Away At ‘Anything Goes’
NAPPANEE — The Cole Porter songs in “Anything Goes” will thrill audiences who attend the musical now on stage at Amish Acres Round Barn Theatre in Nappanee. Both director Jeremy Littljohn and musical director Travis Smith have pulled out all the stops to make this production one that theatregoers will be talking about for a long time.
Billy Crocker (Tyler Whiteman) works for Elisha J. Whitney (Don Hart) and is falling in love with Hope Harcourt (Katie Kuehner) but she seems to be avoiding him. His boss is sailing for England in the morning and Billy has a number of things to do before the ship sales. He runs into an old girlfriend, singer Reno Sweeney (Heidi Ferris) who happens to be sailing on the same ship as Elisha.
Billy shows up at the ship with Elisha’s passport and learns Hope is on the ship. She is with her mother, Evangeline Harcourt (MoMo Lamping) and her fiance, Lord Evelyn Oakleigh (Travis Smith).
Fiance!
Billy sets sail with the ship even though his boss has given him instructions to sell his stocks. He doesn’t have a passport but that’s settled when Moonface Martin (T.J. Besler), a mobster dressed like a minister, tells his girlfriend, Erma (Haley Jane Schafer) to give him her’s. Billy spends the cruise trying to avoid his boss since he doesn’t want Elisha to know he didn’t sell the stock.
Hope is being forced to marry Lord Evelyn because her family is broke and her mother doesn’t want to give up the lifestyle she has become accustomed to. She is, however, in love with Billy.
Reno and Moonface join Billy in trying to show Hope she should marry him, not Lord Evelyn.
Meanwhile Elisha meets Evangeline and tries to court her.
The twists and turns in this musical seem to be never ending. Add songs like “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “You’re the Top,” “It’s De-Lovely,” “Blow, Gabriel Blow,” and “Anything Goes,” and you have a real winner.
Both the songs and the dances show the talent of the Amish Acres crew. There is everything you might expect and more, from rousing tap dance routines and the quiet dances of young lovers as Whiteman and Kuehner claim the spotlight.
Whiteman and Kuehner are fantastic as the young lovers. Hart and Lamping add to the evening and turn in superior performances. Ferris makes the perfect entertainer who tries her best to help Billy and Hope solve their problem. Her backup singers — Purity (Katie Post), Chastity (Harli Cooper), Charity (Sarah McGowan) and Virtue (Sara Drinkwine) — work hard during the show as they join the sailor quartet — A. J. Ackleson, Tim Becze, Travis Bird and Kyle O’Brien — in a number of songs and dances. All are outstanding.
Hats off the rest of the cast and crew — Fred and Ship’s Captain (Bradley S. Kieper), Ship’s Purser (Ryan A. Schisler), Reporter (Kyle O’Brien), photographer (Travis Bird), Luke and John (Anthony Christoper Milfelt), FBI Agent (A. J. Ackleson), Ensemble (Joelle Rassi).
