An Idea Place
Are you stuck in a reading rut? Wilma Kitson is a new “reading advisor” at the Syracuse Public Library. She was found waiting in a corner of the library and is now silently offering reading suggestions — after all, a bust can only say so much.
Perusing the aisles is another way to discover authors that have been either on the best-seller list, award winners or requested by another patron.
You don’t even need a library card to find new ideas. Computer use is free and available to everyone. Reading newspapers and magazines while taking a break from the heat is another favorite activity. Used books are for sale and, during the month of August, are half-price.
Tapping And Tarpon
Angie Hernandez is leading one of her most popular classes from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4. Tapping, also called Emotional Freedom Technique (E.F.T.), is a way to get relief from pain, anxiety or addictions. Hernandez is demonstrating the energizing tapping technique in the meeting room of the Syracuse library.
Dysfunctional Meets
Randy Wayne White’s early writing career was as a monthly contributor to Outside Magazine. White was a light-tackle fishing guide at Tarpon Bay Marina, Sanibel Island, for 13 years, did more than 3,000 charters and draws heavily on those experiences for his novels.
The book club Dysfunctional is reading the early Doc Ford mysteries that draw on White’s experiences traveling the world, writing about natural history, archaeology, anthropology, travel and politics. The next Dysfunctional meeting is Thursday, Aug. 20.
