Harriet Bachman
Harriet Bachman, 100, of Lenox, Mass., died Saturday, July 25, 2015.
She was born in Syracuse on March 9, 1915, the fifth of seven children born to Charles and Dale Hillabold Bachman. Harriet graduated from Syracuse High School in 1933 and from Indiana University in 1937. As an English major, she was initiated into the academic honorary, Phi Beta Kappa.
After four years of teaching high school in Mississippi, Michigan and Illinois, she enrolled at the University of Chicago where she received a Master’s degree in English Literature and Classical Languages. Miss Bachman then went to New York City where she worked at Henry Holt Publishing Co. for a short time. From there, she moved to “Time” magazine, where she was the chief of the copy desk for over 30 years.
In the early 1950’s, she wrote the “Time” stylebook which guided two generations of “Time” editors and writers. Harriet was inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame in 1997.
Harriet was admired by those who knew her for her keen intellect and for her generosity to family and friends. She is survived by two sisters: Lucy Kern; and Laura Stucky; and eight nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Hilary and Charles Jr.; and by two sisters: Virginia Jenkins; and Mary Jean. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Lenox at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21.
