Purdue AgrAbility Program Helps Veterans Begin Farming Careers
Purdue University is giving active-duty military members and veterans who are interested in agricultural careers a chance to explore farming through the university’s AgrAbility program.
Participants will be invited to tour Blue Yonder Organic Farm in North Salem Aug. 16. There, they will have a chance to speak with owner Sara Creech, a former member of the Air Force. Creech raises pastured chickens, turkeys, ducks and sheep, as well as growing organic fruits and vegetables.
The workshop will also include a session discussing financial support programs for veterans who want to farm, including federal grants and loans. Experts will give a presentation and answer questions.
Cindra Chastain, farmer veteran coordinator with the AgrAbility program, said the university hopes to create a network of farmers who are veterans that can interact and learn from each other.
