Harold G. Slater
Harold G. Slater, 83, of rural Claypool, died at 9:48 a.m. Wednesday, July 15, 2015, in Claypool.He was born April 23, 1932 in Kosciusko County, to Harley Eugene and Miriam (Miller) Slater.
Harold was a 1950 graduate of Sidney High School. He married Barbara DeLaughter in Sidney, on May 26, 1951. He, along with his wife, owned and operated Slater’s Fruit Market for 47 years, served the Sidney community, and was a former Jackson Township volunteer fireman. He was a member of the Eel River Community Church of the Brethren. He enjoyed making maple syrup, apple cider, growing Christmas trees and collecting antiques.
He is survived by his wife: Barbara Slater, Claypool; three sons: Kim (Kathy) Slater, South Whitley; Kris (Jill) Slater, Claypool; and Kent Slater, South Whitley; two daughters-in-law: Cindy Slater, Warsaw; and Pam Slater, Elkhart; sister-in-law: Eva Slater, North Manchester; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons: Kevin Slater, who died in 2006; and Kerry Slater, who died in 2013; and his brother: Donald Slater.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 20, at Eel River Community Church of the Brethren, Silver Lake, with Pastor Doug Reichenbach officiating. Burial will be in Ulrey Cemetery, Silver Lake. Friends may call 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday at Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel, North Manchester, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Preferred memorial is Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department.
