Jackowiak The Hero For Champ Concord
ELKHART – The Concord softball team saved its best for last Friday night.
The Minutemen made it two straight sectional championships in thrilling fashion at Elkhart Memorial.
A pair of two-out RBI singles in their final at-bat in the top of the seventh inning lifted Concord past Northridge 3-2 in the title tilt of the Class 4-A Elkhart Memorial Sectional.
Concord, which improves to 20-6, will host either Penn or Mishawaka on Tuesday night at 5:30 in a one-game regional. Penn faces Mishawaka Saturday at noon in the championship game of the South Bend Adams Sectional.
Senior Maddi Jackowiak delivered the game winner for coach Dawn Austin’s Concord club. She smacked an RBI single with two outs to give her team the 3-2 lead. Senior Jade Iavagnilio, the No. 9 hitter in the order who scored on Jackowiak’s hit, had tied the game the batter before with her own RBI single for the champions.
Jackowiak also drove in a run with an RBI single in the sixth inning.
Northridge, which finishes at 17-10, scored two runs in the first inning. Both runs came home on wild pitches.
RaeAnn Miller, who retired the Raiders in order in their final at bat in the bottom of the seventh, pitched a four-hitter for the win.
Sami Deisler, who had a double at the plate, took the pitching loss for the Raiders.
Concord and Northridge tied for second in the NLC during the regular season as each went 11-3 in league play.
The back-to-back sectional titles are the first two in a row in program history for Concord.
