Syracuse Celebrates Memorial Day
Mother Nature held off with the rain, with the exception of a brief shower during the ceremony in Syracuse Cemetery, until the festivities were over this afternoon.
A large crowd, stretching from Medusa Street up along Huntington and around on Main Street, turned out for this year’s Memorial Day parade.
There was a brief pause at the beginning of the parade as a wreath was tossed into the water, along with a gun salute and the playing of taps to honor those who died at sea serving their country.
Entries in this year’s parade included the American Legion Riders, the Shriner’s Topless Car Unit, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, the Wawasee Marching band and many more entries.
In the cemetery, Bruno Wolski, commander of American Legion Post No. 223, welcomed everyone who came. Chaplain Jerry Wingardner gave the benediction.
As the Wawasee Marching Band began to play the National Anthem and then Stars and Stripes forever, there was a brief shower.
Chaplain Gene Kennard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1342 read the roll call of members who have died in the last year. Chaplain Carolyn Gunder read the roll call of members who died from American Legion Post No. 223.
Wolski called the color guard and firing party to attention and ordered the firing party to fire three volleys. He then dismissed the color guard and firing party along with everyone else.
