Warsaw Tennis To Meet Familiar Foe
WARSAW – The Warsaw girls tennis team, if familiarity really does breed success, should be sitting pretty for regional play.
The Tigers open regional action Tuesday night at Culver Academies versus Northern Lakes Conference counterpart Plymouth. Warsaw dropped a 5-0 regular-season final at Plymouth back on April 21.
The other semifinal match Tuesday evening pits the host Eagles of Culver Academies versus Wabash. The Tigers beat Culver Academies 3-2 on May 7 at Culver.
Warsaw will face the Pilgrims with a completely different lineup than the one from last month. The Tigers only have one player in the same position as in that match in Sydney Hartman at No. 2 doubles.
“We have a different lineup and our girls have matured and have gained confidence,” said Warsaw coach Rick Orban Friday after his team whitewashed Whitko 5-0 to win its 15th straight sectional championship.
Warsaw had freshmen Colette Smith (No. 1), Liza Lewis (No. 2) and Grace Miller (No. 3) at singles the first time they played Plymouth. The singles lineup now has Lewis at one, Smith at two and freshman Ella Knight at three. The Tigers doubles lineup was Athena Schlitt and Knight at No. 1 and Hartman and Rosie Fleming at No. 2 back in April. The No. 1 team is now made up of senior Camille Kerlin and freshman Hannah Rice with senior Hartman paired with sophomore Schlitt at No. 2.
The Tigers also faced Plymouth, which is using the same lineup as they did versus Warsaw back in April, twice in the NLC Tournament May 13-15. Lewis beat Erin Hunter 7-5, 6-4 and Knight topped Jessica Stillson 6-2, 6-4 in matches during the league tourney.
“Plymouth is an extremely good team,” Orban said. “It’s going to be a tough match. We have to go in there and take the momentum from them. They will come in there expecting they can beat us.”
Plymouth defeated Triton 5-0 Friday to win the Bremen Sectional title.
Warsaw won at No. 2 and No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles in the win over Culver Academies earlier this month. That lineup had Knight at No. 2 and Rosie Fleming at No. 3 with Hartman and Schlitt at No. 2 doubles.
The Tigers lost 4-1 to Peru in a regional semifinal a year ago. Culver Academies beat Bremen 4-1 and then blanked Peru 5-0 in the regional final. The Eagles then edged Crown Point 3-2 to win the semistate before losing 4-1 to North Central in a quarterfinal match at the State Finals to cap an 18-5 season.
Culver Academies has won three regional championships in a row. The last regional title for Warsaw came in 2005, while Plymouth last captured a regional crown in 2006.
The regional semifinals are scheduled for a 5 p.m. start Tuesday evening. The regional final is at 5 on Wednesday. The regional champion will return to Culver Academies May 30 to face the Highland Regional winner at 10 a.m. in the semistate.
