Pilgrims Sideline Triton Tennis Team
BREMEN – The Triton girls tennis team saw its sensational season come to a close Friday night.
The Trojans dropped a 5-0 final to Plymouth in the title match of the Bremen Sectional.
Plymouth advances to play Warsaw on Tuesday evening in the semifinals of the Culver Academies Regional.
The Pilgrims, who had won 13 straight sectional titles until being dethroned by Bremen last year, came out strong.
Erin Hunter topped Kaelyn Mason 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles to pace the Pilgrims.
Lanae Singleton beat Shayla May 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Jessica Stillson completed the singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Quinn Downing at No. 3.
Plymouth also took both doubles matches in straight sets. The team of Libbie Portteus and Haley Harrell stopped Kylie Mason and Kolbie Mason 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1. The duo of Kendell Dreibelbis and McKenzie Scheetz topped Emma Ross and Hannah Wanemacher 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2.
“Plymouth came out strong and took us out of our game early,” said Triton coach Al Peckham. “We had a great year.”
Triton, whose last sectional title came in 2004, lost 4-1 to Bremen in the sectional final a year ago. Plymouth has now won a total of 30 sectional titles.
The Trojans finished the season at 14-2. The Trojans won the Northern State Conference Tournament and shared the overall NSC championship with Bremen.
The Trojans do lose stellar senior sisters in Kaelyn and Kylie Mason.
