Students in grades three through six can strengthen their problem-solving and strategizing skills by learning to play chess at Manchester University.
The North Manchester campus is hosting Chess Success camp led by a faculty member June 8 to 12. Registration is required by June 1. To register, visit https://secure.touchnet.net/C23277_ustores/web/store_main.jsp?STOREID=18&SINGLESTORE=true.
Dr. Judd Case, associate professor of communication studies, will teach rules and tricks of the game, using the software program “Think Like a King” by the U.S. Chess Federation. The program is a nationwide project to promote chess as an educational activity that provides the tools to develop “successful thinking for a successful life.”
Students will have fun while exercising their brains and benefiting from the skills that chess helps nurture. According to chess.com, the game can increase IQ, improve concentration and memory, and teach planning and foresight.
Case, advisor of the North Manchester rotary club’s chess for success after-school program, will highlight hands-on skill development and good sportsmanship during the camp.
“There will be group instruction, one-on-one instruction, puzzle-solving, and structured play,” Case said. “Each day will be dedicated to an area of chess: tactics, strategies, openings, end games, and tournament play.”
After learning the ins and outs of the game, boys and girls will compete in a real chess tournament and have the chance to bring home a trophy.
The day camp is 9 a.m. to noon at the University’s Science Center. The cost is $99 per camper. Snacks and a T-shirt will be provided.
