Baker Youth Club Prepares To Open New Doors
Children and teens in Kosciusko can start celebrating. The new location for the Baker Youth Club is preparing to open its doors in the coming weeks. The location, which has been in development over the past two years will host a ribbon cutting ceremony from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 4.
Though the public will get its first official peek at the new 46,000 square foot facility in June, InkFreeNews was able to meet with Executive Director Tracy Furnivall for a few highlights at the new facility.
According to Furnivall, who has been with BYC for 14 years, the center will focus on building a healthy, happy lifestyle for its patrons. Offering a variety of healthy workshops, homework help centers, activity times and recreational activities, the center has something for everyone.
Though the club has been known primarily as a location for grade school children, Furnivall noted major strides have been taken to create a separate space for both middle school and high school visitors. Teenagers will have access to their own corridor of the center, complete with an artificial turf gym, a second gym area and even a coffee shop lounge equipped with wifi. Furnivall noted the new lounge area will offer an area for teens to socialize, work on homework and play games while enjoying hot cappuccinos and beverages.
In addition to fresh paint and resurfacing floors, other changes at the center will provide for both safety and entertainment for guests. Furnivall noted numerous security cameras have been installed throughout the security as well as windows into gyms to ensure maximum supervision. In addition, the two preexisting pool areas have been drained to create new gym spaces, one of which is overlaid with artificial turf to provide for an “outdoor” activity area while still inside the building.
Furnivall noted the decision to fill the pools stemmed from both safety and expense concerns surrounding the two aging pools in the building.
The summer program at the BYC is preparing to kick off just after the ribbon cutting. On June 8, doors will open for operations. An eight week program will be held at the center promoting healthy lifestyles throughout the summer. Those interested in registering must pay a one time $40 fee and may sign up in person at the BYC or by visiting the club’s website.
The after school program will begin after, allowing children a place to be active, receive school assistance from trained teaching staff, socialize with peers and even eat dinner. Food, snacks and drinks are provided for free by the BYC to guests. Those interested in signing up for the after school program my do so by applying at the BYC or visiting the club’s website. Registration is $50 and will cover the entire school year.
