Janet L. Lumpkins
Janet L. Lumpkins, 83, of Columbia City, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2015, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Columbia City.
Born July 12, 1931, in Altoona, Pa., she was the daughter of Ira F. and Hazel (Evans) Salkeld.
She graduated from Everett High School in Everett, Pa., with the Class of 1949, and attended Penn State College. Janet worked for 14 years for United Telephone in Pennsylvania and 26 years with Civil Service and Army, retiring in 1991 as an Accounts Analyst.
With her job she traveled around and worked in Pa., Wash., Ky., Tenn., Md., Ga., Ala., and worked overseas. After her retirement, she moved to Whitley County to be closer to her daughter and worked at Star Bank in Columbia City for seven years.
She was a member of the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sigma Eta Fine Arts Society, National Association for Retired Federal Employees, Eastern Star, DAR and the American Legion Auxiliary. Janet delivered books to the homebound as a member of The Friends of the Peabody Public Library. She was very musically talented and played the piano, clarinet, trumpet, drums, and cornet. She also had a wonderful voice.
Survivors include her daughter: Charlene M. (Nicholas) McDevitt, Columbia City; grandson: Scott A. (Brandy) McDevitt, Columbia City; and great-grandsons: Noah Ross; and Gabriel Donnelly. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husbands: L. “Jim” Smith Gaskin; and Joe A. Lumpkins.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday, May 22, and from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday, May 23, at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home, Columbia City. Her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday. Memorials may be given in memory of Mrs. Lumpkins to the Peabody Public Library, Grace Lutheran Food Pantry, or Crystal Spring Methodist Camp Meeting Auxiliary.
