Legion Riders Raise Thousands For Special Olympics
Rain or shine, for the last three years, Millersburg American Legion 484 Legion Riders have raised thousands of dollars to help Special Olympics of Elkhart County participate in swimming and track events.
This year’s ride left Millersburg at 11 a.m. and visited the Nappanee Legion, Pie-Eyed Petey’s and Syracuse Legion before returning around 4 p.m.
“It’s been great,” enthused Bud Miller, Special Olympics Fundraising Coordinator for Elkhart County. “I tried for many years to have a fundraiser like this, and these guys just fell in our lap.”
The Millersburg Legion Riders hold three rides per year. Proceeds from other events go to the American Legion, disabled veterans and Toys For Tots. Last year, the Riders also raised $6,500 towards a kidney transplant for Cromwell’s Kelly Rasnake.
The Special Olympics ride was Chad Berkeypile’s first as Legion Riders Director. “I’m so happy to be a member of this legion,” he stated, “It’s like a family.” Berkeypile added that they were lucky the rain held off, though they would have ridden regardless. Turnout was slightly lower due to the morning rain before the ride, but 40 bikes were entered with 54 riders. The fee was $20 per bike and $15 per passenger. A 50/50 board and tip boards were also being held to raise funds. According to Berkeypile, the winners always donate everything to the cause. “Nobody has ever kept the money.”
Members of the Legion Riders must own a bike and be members or progeny of American Legion or Auxiliary members.
Although the Riders usually support different causes from year to year, this is the third year raising money for the Special Olympics. “It’s a good cause and everybody loves it,” affirmed Berkeypile.
