Whitko Sports Wrap – May 14
The bats were in full swing for the Whitko baseball team Thursday evening.
The Wildcats were in offensive mode in defeating host North Miami 12-5 in a Three Rivers Conference matchup.
Whitko piled up a total of 15 hits in the league win.
A plethora of players got into the act for coach Erik Hisner’s squad. Landed Goff smacked a homer to lead the hit parade.
Riley Anderson was 3-3 at the plate for the winners. Drew Bradford was 2-3, Tanner Goff 2-4 and Tanner Hughes 2-5 with a double.
Winning pitcher Zach Snep had a big game at the plate by going 2-4 with a double and a triple and an RBI.
Whitko improves to 15-7 overall and moves to 5-1 in the TRC.
The Wildcats will host Southwood on Monday.
Softball Team Falls To North Miami
The Whitko softball team dropped a 4-0 decision at North Miami.
The Wildcats played a strong game against the Class 1-A defending state champions. Whitko turned a double play and a triple play in the Three Rivers Conference contest.
Kennedy Krull had the lone hit for Whitko with a double.
Hanna Yohe took the pitching loss for the Wildcats. Aly Nicodemus pitched well in relief for Whitko.
Whitko will host Heritage on Saturday.
Reed Stars For Champion Girls Track Team
Kaitlyn Reed and the Whitko girls track team both had some kind of showing Thursday night.
Reed collected a trio of individual championships to lead the Wildcats to the team title of the Three Rivers Conference meet.
Reed won the 100 in a time of 13.22, took top honors in the 200 in 27.04 and won the high jump by clearing 5-1.
Whitko scored 122.5 points to win the TRC title, finishing ahead of runner-up Northfield (114.5).
Michelle Kelsey claimed the TRC pole vault title with a winning effort of 7-6.
The 4 X 100 relay team of Elaine Warner, Abby Overmeyer, Reghan Craig and Megan Thomas also won in a time of 52.57.
The trio of Warner, Craig and Overmeyer all earned runner-up finishes. Warner was second in the long jump, while Craig was second in the pole vault and Overmeyer second in the 100.
Rochester was third in the final team standings with 84 points. Southwood was fourth with 81.5, followed by Manchester (80.5), Wabash (53), Tippecanoe Valley (44) and North Miami (41).
Whitko will compete in the Rochester Sectional on Tuesday night.
Boys Track Team Second At TRC
The Whitko boys track team had a strong showing at the Three Rivers Conference Meet at Southwood.
The Wildcats finished in second place by scoring 112.5 points. Wabash won the team title with 142.5 points.
Walker Hobbs led the way for the Wildcats by earning a TRC title in the shot put. Hobbs won the event with a throw of 52 1/4.
Whitko got second-place finishes from Will Bumbaugh in the pole vault and Daniel Kirkham in the 400.
The 4 X 100 relay team of Bumbaugh, Garrett Elder, Alex Wilson and Gavin Powell was also second for the Wildcats.
Zach Baughman took third in the shot put for the Wildcats. Brady Weeks was third in both the 110 and 300 hurdles events, while Jacob Helton was third in the pole vault and Gavin Howard third in the shot put.
Rochester was third in the final team standings with 99 points. Northfield was fourth with 93, followed by Tippecanoe Valley (56), Manchester (44), North Miami (41) and Southwood (32).
Whitko will compete in the Plymouth Sectional on May 21.
JV Baseball Team A Winner
The Whitko junior varsity baseball team continued its strong season by edging past Southwood 7-6.
Jake Rothgeb was the hero for the host Wildcats as his RBI single with two outs in the seventh inning drove home the winning run.
River West pitched the final four innings, allowing just one run, to get the win for Whitko.
Whitko, now 14-4, will host its own invitational on Saturday. The Wildcats will play South Bend Adams at 10 a.m. Also in the tourney are NorthWood and Central Noble.
