Evelyn Maxine DiGregory
Evelyn Maxine DiGregory, 96, a resident of rural Churubusco and wife of Alfred DiGregory, passed away at Wednesday, May 13, 2015, at Miller’s Merry Manor at Oak Pointe in Columbia City following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. DiGregory was born on Aug. 31, 1918, in Thorncreek Township in Whitley County, a daughter of LeVerr (Gaff) Shanabarger, and was educated in the Churubusco and Huntertown schools.
On April 22, 1950, she was married in Fort Wayne to Alfred DiGregory and lived there until moving to their present home south of Churubusco in 1962.
Employed at General Electric in Fort Wayne, she retired as a winder there after 24 years, and was past president of its Elex Club.
She also a member of the Churubusco United Methodist Church, its United Methodist Women, and was named the United Methodist Women’s Woman of the Year in 1982. In addition, both she and her husband were awarded the Whitley County “Heart of Gold Award” in 1997.
The surviving relatives include her husband: Alfred “Al,” to whom she was married for over 65 years; and 19 nieces and nephews.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by three brothers: Guy Shanabarger; Con Shanabarger; and Jack Shanabarger; and by two sisters: Ilene Waters; and Fern Davis.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 18, in Churubusco United Methodist Church with Pastor Corinne Boruff-Stucker, officiating.
The family will receive friends at Sheets and Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., or at the church one hour prior to the service Monday morning.
Interment will be in the Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Churubusco Youth Foundation.
