C. William ‘Bill’ Freyberg
Mr. C. William “Bill” Freyberg, 85, of Rochester, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away at home at 4:43 p.m. Saturday, May 2.
Born on April 14, 1930 in Tiffin, Ohio he was a treasured son of Frederick F. and Eileen Paxton Freyberg. Growing up he shared his childhood with his brother Fred. The family moved to Chicago and Bill graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1948.
In pursuit of his life long dream to become a journalist, Bill studied journalism at Indiana University. His collegiate years were interrupted when he served our country with the United States Marines during the Korean War from December 1951 thru December 1953. Returning stateside, Bill continued at I.U. and graduated with his bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1955.
Bill’s initial assignment was with the Rochester Sentinel as sports editor. His career with the Sentinel spanned over 37 years. When Bill retired, he was serving as editor of the paper.
Left to cherish Bill’s memory are his wife: Janet; a daughter: Becky (John) Hart; two sons: Larry Freyberg, North Port, Florida; and Jerry (Tammy) Freyberg, Dothan, Alabama; four grandchildren: Carmen Christine (Stephen) Rockwell; Shelley Eileen Hart; Bradley Alan (Jackie) Freyberg; Andrew Andrew Freyberg; four great grandchildren: Trenten Sainer; Courtney Sainer; Payten Sainer; and Kora Rockwell; sister-in-law: Donna Smith; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are his parents and a brother: Fred Freyberg Jr.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, at the Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester, and one hour before the service, which will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 6, also at the funeral home.
Pastor Maurice Grindle will officiate services. Burial will be in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery.
