Bone City Ready To Roll
WARSAW – It’s year two for “the other team” in town, and the Bone City Rollers are ready to make a name for themselves in Warsaw.
After what the roller derby team considered a successful maiden year in 2014, the Rollers are hoping to start their bout season off with a bang Saturday night when Kokomo City of Fists come calling. A 5 p.m. start at Hansen’s Eastlake Skate Center, or the Boneyard, will have a fortified BCR roster that has nearly doubled since this time last year.
“We’ve really only taken a short break since Christmas, about two weeks off,” started Megan Dinse, otherwise known as Mouthy Magpie. “We have 18 girls that are full-time and would love to get a couple more to get over 20 on the roster.”
Bone City became a team in November of 2013 and began the slow rise of creating its own identity in a town that already has a roller derby team in the Lake City Roller Dolls. Choosing to go its own route, Bone City is proud of its own attitude, its own pace and focusing on its philanthropy as much as it does its skating.
Priding itself on the work it has already done in the Warsaw community, the Bone City Rollers have donated over $4,000 in items, money and supplies as well as put in over 450 combined hours of community service. The May 9 bout with Kokomo will have the door proceeds go to the Rose Home in Syracuse, a safe haven for women going through addiction and other mental and physical needs.
“The Rose Home really needs the help, and we want to step up for them,” Dinse said. “We are here to help. We are always looking for people to help. If we can do that through derby, great. If we can do that on our own time, that’s great, too.”
Among some of the other philanthropic efforts from the Rollers include the Special Olympics, Boomerang Backpacks and Fellowship Ministries.
On the flat track, the Bone City Rollers are gaining traction and branching out. With a young core of eager skaters, the team has bookings with teams from Ohio, Illinois and Michigan. The Saturday night bout with Kokomo should pit two teams trying to build as Kokomo was decimated with facility and roster losses last year. With Bone City’s galvanizing in anticipation of the summer push, the team is very ready for this weekend.
“We have a pretty committed core of skaters,” began Kassandra Klinefelter, or Unraveled Kaos. “The October bout was the first time I had ever seen roller derby, and I love it. I’ve always done things for everyone else. PTO for my kids. Lions Club for the community. BMX for my husband. But roller derby, this is my thing.”
Added Stacy Fluke, AKA Twisted Princess, “I’ve gone to several bouts. I’m completely into it. It just feels good. Being in derby is just so much fun.”
Tickets for the bout with Kokomo are $6 presale, $8 at the door, and kids three and under are free. Presale tickets are available at www.brownpapertickets.com. For more information on the Bone City Rollers, including a full roster and schedule, visit www.bonecityrollers.com or find them on Facebook.
