Most Endangered Indiana Landmarks
The Indiana Landmarks organization has announced its annual list of the 10 most endangered Hoosier landmarks, which includes seven new entries and three locations that are repeating from the 2014 list.
Circumstances that land properties among the most endangered vary, but usually involve factors such as the threat of demolition, abandonment, neglectful owners, dilapidation, lack of money for repairs, unreasonable or above-market pricing, out-of-the-way location or encroaching sprawl.
“Indiana Landmarks works to save vintage places well before the eleventh hour, but sometimes very important structures reach the dire point, and calling attention to them via the 10 most endangered list helps rescue them,” stated Marsh Davis, president of Indiana Landmarks. “They’re not lost causes. All have the potential for revival and reuse.”
This year’s list includes seven new locations:
I.O.O.F. – United Brethren Block, Huntington
Former First Presbyterian Church and Lafayette Building, South Bend
Camp Chesterfield, Chesterfield
McCurdy Hotel, Evansville
Rivoli Theater, Indianapolis
Indiana Medical History Museum, Indianapolis
Elks Building, Bedford
Repeating from the 2014 list are:
Mills House, Greenwood
McDonald House, Attica
Indiana County Homes
Since the first list of endangered landmarks was created in 1991, 104 historic places in jeopardy have been brought to light. So far only 13 have been lost to demolition.
