Warriors Finish Sixth At North Side Relays
FORT WAYNE – In an early season showcase for boys track, Wawasee kept pace with some of the heavy hitters at the North Side Relays hosted Saturday by Fort Wayne North Side.
Among the top showings for Wawasee were a pair of event wins. Clayton Cook was tops in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 14.1 and nearly had a title in the long jump with his sail of 21-02.25, just a quarter inch short of champion David Tippmann of Fort Wayne Dwenger, who measured in at 21-02.50.
Hunter Jones claimed honors in the B Flight of the shot put at 43-5 while a pair of Warriors claimed spots in discus. Jon Walker was second in the A Flight at 134-00 while Dylan Elpusan was fourth in the B Flight at 111-02.
JJ Gilmer nearly added a title for Wawasee in the high jump, losing a first-place jump off to Fort Wayne Carroll’s Kaleb Johnson. Both cleared 6-4 but Johnson won the jump off to best Gilmer.
Wawasee had a pair of relays claim top-threes. The 4×100 of Cook, Gilmer, Tyler Courter and Cole VanLue were second at 43.62 and the 4×200 relay of Courter, Gilmer, Cook and Jake Hutchinson were third at 1:34.17.
Overall, Wawasee placed sixth in the team standings with 63 points, one shy of the host North Side team. Carroll was the champion with 159 points while Fort Wayne Northrop was runner-up at 138.3 points.
Wawasee returns to Northern Lakes Conference dual meets Thursday in visiting Concord with Warsaw completing the triangular.
