New Certification Required For Michigan Mushroom Sellers
The state of Michigan is now requiring anyone who forages for and sells edible wild mushrooms to register for a new certification program.
The program is meant to ensure that people who buy wild mushrooms aren’t mistakenly poisoned. Foragers will be required to attend an all-day class and score 80 percent or higher on a test to be granted five year certification as a mushroom identification expert.
The new program will bring mushroom sellers in line with the state’s food code, which requires that wild mushrooms being sold come from sources where each is inspected by an approved expert.
So far, more than 100 people have signed up for three upcoming classes. Training costs $175.
