Wawasee Sports Wrap – April 16
A two-run double from Nate Prescott in the bottom of the sixth pushed across the eventual winning runs in Wawasee’s 4-2 win over Columbia City Thursday evening.
Prescott had two hits in the game, as did Drew Wright, who drove in the other two runs in the fourth inning on a double.
Caleb Dingeldein reached base three times on a hit and two walks and scored a run for the Warriors, which move to 5-0 with the win.
Aaron Voirol picked up his third win of the season, getting this one in 1.1 innings of relief. Starter Lucas Garza was sharp, working into the sixth giving up just the two earned runs and striking out eight Eagles.
Wawasee will face its toughest test to date Friday when it travels to Ossian to take on state-ranked Norwell.
Freshmen Pounded By Goshen
While the varsity had a big night, the Wawasee C-team baseball squad did not fare nearly as well in a 10-0 loss at Goshen.
Warrior pitchers Tim Conley and Cayden Wegener pitched well in defeat, combining to give up just seven hits and three walks. Goshen hurler Ryan Jacobs worked 5.1 innings, giving up just four hits and striking out five.
Wawasee falls to 0-3 with the loss and will get back at it Tuesday at Plymouth.
Warriors Singled Out By Redskins
It was a singles game for Goshen Thursday night on the tennis courts in a 3-2 win over Wawasee.
All three singles courts for Goshen were victorious in fine fashion, and all three wins were crucial as Wawasee claimed the two doubles courts.
Goshen’s Kathleen Morrical at one singles, Kayci Troyer at two singles and Ali Miller at three singles gave up just five games against Wawasee’s offering of Jada Antonides, Nealy Thanasrivanitchai and Chelsea Carolus.
On the other hand, Wawasee’s doubles had to scratch and claw to earn its two court battles.
At one doubles, Warriors Charity Parker and Ashley Larson split the first two sets with Redskins Kayleigh Crowder and Megan Ewing, 7-5 Wawasee and 6-1 Goshen, before the teams played into the night in the third set, which Wawasee took 10-6 in the super tiebreaker.
At two doubles, Wawasee’s Brooke Fick and Kabrea Rostochak survived Liz Erickson and Alexis Johnston 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.
Goshen won seven of the 10 JV matches. Taking JV wins for Wawasee were the pairings of Courtney Larson and Madison Cooper, Jasmine Morehead and Brittany Jackson, and Lizzy Brugh and Alison Troutman.
Wawasee falls to 1-3 on the season and 0-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference and return to action Tuesday at home against Concord.
